What is FurMates?

FurMates is a reincarnation of a former site called ConRoomies. This website allows convention-goers to find a room at a convention hotel or roommates if you have extra room to share. Additionally, if you want to carpool to a convention, we have you covered as well. You can create a listing if you need a ride, or if you’re a driver who has extra seats.

Why is this site necessary?

We noticed that anytime a convention was coming up, people would try to find a room to sleep in, extra roommates, or a ride to the convention. However, the ways in which people have tried to reach out to each other have until now been on an ad-hoc basis, and it is very easy to miss a message. It’d be a shame to miss out on being able to go to a convention just because you didn’t check Twitter at the right time.

And so that’s where FurMates comes in. You can check in at any time for listings for upcoming conventions and either create a new listing or respond to an existing listing whenever you’d like. We believe this will make it far easier to find a room, roommates, or a carpool opportunity.

How does it work?

It’s very easy! On the homepage, you’ll see a list of upcoming conventions. Under each convention are the four types of listings:

• Rooms Available
• Rooms Needed
• Rides Available
• Rides Needed

Simply click through to any one of those and you’ll be brought to a page that will show you all the currently available listings for that convention. From this page, you can also create a new listing. To create a new listing or reply to an existing listing, you’ll need to be signed in. We currently offer only one kind of authentication option right now: a in-house verification system.

When you create a new listing, it will immediately show up on the listing page, and we encourage you to share the link out to help find someone to respond. Additionally, our BlueSky account (@furmates.org) will automatically send a Tweet out about the new listing. If you want to keep track of any new listings, we encourage you to follow this account.

When you’re signed in, you will be able to respond to any active listing. Your response will be emailed to the creator of the listing. In addition to receiving a new email about any replies, the original creator of the listing will be able to come back to the listing page and view any replies.

So what’s the catch?

There is none! We just saw a sore need for this site and decided that it would be fun to build. We hope you enjoy using it as much as we’ve enjoyed building it!
